Speed Kills: Violent Accident in Yonkers, NY Splits Car in Half, Killing Five

Driving at excessive speeds is deadly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in the last twenty years, one-third of fatal car accidents have involved speeding as the primary cause.

When a driver operates a vehicle at speeds that exceed the posted speed limit or at speeds that are too fast for the current road conditions, such as poor weather or traffic congestion, that person endangers the lives of everyone on the road.

Fatal Accident in Yonkers – December 22nd 2020

Just last evening at approximately 9:30 p.m., there was a two-car crash in Yonkers at Riverdale Avenue and Culver Street. A driver traveling at an extreme speed struck a car with four occupants, splitting that car in half, and killing everyone inside. The 36-year-old driver of the speeding car died shortly thereafter. The four passengers were recent high school graduates.

Although the crash is currently under investigation, it appears that this accident could have been avoided if the driver had been traveling at the proper speed. Officers had attempted to stop the speeding driver who was driving “beyond reckless speeds.” However, when the car appeared to be pulling over, it suddenly accelerated and took off before striking the other car.

“Four young lives were cut short by the recklessness of one individual,” said Mayor Mike Spano in a statement. “Let this be a lesson to all who drive at excessive speeds — it not only puts your life at risk but also the innocent lives with whom you share the road.”

Remember These Safe Driving Tips

NHTSA has tips for dealing with speeding drivers:

  • If you are in the left lane and someone wants to pass, move over and let them by.
  • Give speeding drivers plenty of space. Speeding drivers may lose control of their vehicle more easily.
  • Speeding is tied to aggressive driving. If a speeding driver is tailgating you, or trying to engage you in risky driving, use judgment to safely steer your vehicle out of the way.
  • Call the police if you believe a driver is following you or harassing you.
