A Safety Upgrade in the Works to Help Remedy the Hazards of this Dangerous Taconic Roadway
A much-needed and highly-anticipated safety upgrade to a portion of the Taconic State Parkway is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2021.
Labeled the most dangerous intersection on the Taconic State Parkway, the “at-grade” intersection at Pudding Street in Putnam County will finally get a long-awaited $29M overpass, designed to eliminate the unusually high number of accidents on this commuter-packed roadway.
A Long History of Traffic Accidents
Pudding Street intersects the parkway going both north and southbound. This results in drivers on Pudding Street having to cross the Taconic on both sides, dodging vehicles traveling at least 65 mph. Residents have long voiced their concerns about this dangerous condition and have lobbied the New York State Department of Transportation for many years.
Prior to securing funding, it was reported that over one weekend alone, three crashes occurred near this intersection, with multiple drivers being taken to the hospital.
“The Taconic State Parkway is an important piece of Hudson Valley’s heritage with its arching stone bridges and impressive vistas,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said. “Upgrading the Pudding Street interchange is part of our commitment to modernizing the state’s transportation infrastructure for the 21st century, enhancing safety while maintaining the integrity of this remarkable Parkway.”
