A new feature on Waze may help drivers avoid roads with high crash rates. The Google-owned navigation app is reportedly testing a dangerous roads option that will show users crash-prone streets. The feature is in beta testing now but is expected to be available to the general public soon.

New “Dangerous Roads” Feature on Waze
According to PCMag – citing Geektime (an Israeli tech site) – Waze is testing out a beta feature that sends notifications to motorists who are about to drive on a road with a high rate of crashes. The new category will be called “History of traffic accidents” and will be able to be toggled on or off via “Notifications and Reports.”
The new feature will show roads or sections of roads that Waze users have reported a large number of accidents on. Beta users currently receive a notification if they are going to travel on one of these roads. Waze will not send notifications on roads that a user regularly travels and will limit notifications if there are several crash-ridden roads in one area.
Proponents of the option hope that motorists will be more aware and cautious when traveling along these accident-prone roadways.
Crash-Prone Roads in Hudson Valley

Commonly traveled roadways, including a stretch of Interstate 684 in Putnam County and the section of Route 202 in Haverstraw that intersects Palisades Interstate Parkway and Route 45, top the list.

How the Waze Dangerous Roads Feature May Help
While the new dangerous road notification is still in beta, it is expected to launch to all users of the navigation app soon. The feature may help longtime residents and passers-through recognize unsafe roads. Ideally, with a notification of an accident-ridden road or section of road, drivers will either slow down or avoid the route altogether ultimately reducing the number of crashes.
Waze encourages motorists to report information such as crashes, road conditions, speed traps, and more to other users. The app is reportedly using this info to help determine the roadways with a high rate of accidents.
